Dovetail Cutter for CNC Metalworking
A dovetail cutter machines angled sidewalls in dovetail slots, guideways, and other undercut profiles. Its form-cutting head creates the required inclined profile, while the reduced neck provides clearance behind the cutting edges.
In CNC metalworking, buyers may also call this tool a dovetail milling cutter or dovetail end mill. However, the cutter geometry and dimensions must match the required slot profile and machining conditions.
Dovetail Cutter Specification Options
Cutter Angles and Diameter Options
Our solid carbide dovetail cutter range includes 30°, 45°, 60°, and 75° angle options. Across different product series, our catalogs cover cutting diameters from Ø0.8 to Ø20 mm.
For reference, the following table shows four representative configurations from our manufacturing sources.
Representative Dovetail Cutter Specifications
| Cutter Angle | Cutter Diameter | Neck Diameter (d) | Neck Relief Length (h) | Shank Diameter (D) | Overall Length (L) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30° | Ø4 | Ø2 | 6 | Ø4 | 50 |
| 45° | Ø1.5 | Ø0.75 | 2.5 | Ø4 | 50 |
| 60° | Ø2.5 | Ø1.25 | 5 | Ø4 | 50 |
| 75° | Ø12 | Ø6 | 15 | Ø12 | 60 |
All dimensions are in mm. These examples do not represent every available size or configuration. Cutter angles and final dimensions follow the corresponding manufacturer drawings.
Neck Clearance, Flutes and Coatings
When selecting a dovetail cutter, check whether the neck diameter and relief length provide enough clearance for the required slot geometry. These dimensions are especially important for recessed machining.
Our standard catalog configurations typically feature four flutes. However, we can evaluate other flute configurations according to the cutter size and machining requirements.
Nano-coated and other coating options are available for different applications. The appropriate coating depends on the workpiece material and cutter configuration.
Applications and Tool Selection
Dovetail Slot and Guideway Milling
Dovetail cutters machine inclined sidewalls in dovetail grooves, guideway profiles, and related undercut features. In these applications, the cutting profile must match the required slot geometry.
For internal dovetail slots, a preliminary straight slot may be necessary to provide access for the cutting head. The dovetail cutter then machines the angled sidewalls to the required profile.
Before selecting a tool, consider the slot angle, cutter diameter, neck clearance, and available machining space.
For T-shaped slots with a different undercut profile, see T Slot Cutter.
Choosing a Cutter for Different Materials
Different cutter configurations are available for steel, cast iron, aluminum, and copper machining.
For steel and cast iron, select the cutting geometry and coating according to the material grade and machining requirements.
For aluminum and copper, the cutting-edge geometry and surface configuration should suit the material and cutting conditions.
Therefore, identify the workpiece material before confirming the cutter configuration. A cutter designed for one material may not suit every application.
Key Features of Our Dovetail Cutters
- Solid Carbide Construction: Solid carbide material for industrial CNC cutting applications.
- Angled Cutting Head: Form-cutting geometry for inclined dovetail profiles.
- Reduced-Neck Design: Provides clearance behind the cutting head for recessed machining.
- Multiple Tool Configurations: Cutter dimensions, flute configurations, and coating options vary according to the application.
For repeat orders or replacement tools, use the complete cutter dimensions or an existing model reference to identify the required configuration accurately.
Custom Dovetail Cutter Manufacturing
CutterBest supports custom dovetail cutter manufacturing based on customer drawings and machining requirements.
Depending on the tool design, we can review the following custom options:
- Cutter angles and cutting diameters
- Neck diameters and relief lengths
- Shank dimensions and overall lengths
- Flute configurations
- Coating requirements
To request a custom tool quotation, please provide the part or cutter drawing, required dimensions, workpiece material, and order quantity. When applicable, also include machine or tool-holder restrictions.
We review each non-standard request for technical feasibility before confirming the final tool specifications.
Dovetail Cutter FAQ
Can you manufacture a replacement for an existing dovetail cutter?
Yes. Send us the existing tool model, manufacturer reference, or dimensioned drawing. We will review the specifications and confirm whether we can manufacture a matching cutter.
Are all catalog dimensions available from stock?
Catalog dimensions do not guarantee stock availability. We confirm actual availability and production lead time according to the required specifications and order quantity.
Can you provide a quotation based on a product photo?
A product photo or existing model reference can help us identify the tool initially. However, we may need additional dimensions and technical requirements to confirm the configuration and provide an accurate quotation.
